Brief history of SD format: density of different standards

In 1999, SanDisk, Toshiba and Matsushita (now Matsushita took the name of its most popular brand, Panasonic), gathered, thought and decided to develop a new memory model called Secure Digital or, if so, SD. The word is secure in the name of a bad name - these cards are supported by DRM (Digital Rights Management) under SDMI (Secure Digital Music Initiative). Three large companies thought Secure Digital should be the next step in development. memory MMC and compete with Memory Stick is a standard submitted a year earlier by Sony. In the first year of existence, the triad SanDisk, Toshiba and Matsushita formed the SD Association, which attracted many new members. And who is not there today: Intel, AMD, Apple, Samsung, Canon, Nikon, Hewlett-Packard, Kinston, Lexar and many others.

The maximum number of SD's first memory maps was only 2 Gbite, although there were times two large scale models. At first, there was a lot of free space, but there was little time. Therefore, the second version of SD specifications was announced in 2006, enabling the creation of Secure Digital High Capacity memory maps (SD high-capacity map or SDHC), up to 32 Gbite, with the FAT32 file system. The new memory maps had problems with reciprocity; not all the old Cardridges were able to recognize the SDHC hosts, although the use of old SD memory maps in new rhetoric or SDHC-support devices could have been without particular problems.

A few years later, in 2009, the SD cards of 32 Gbites were already tight, so another, new format was inspired to provide the world with Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) as described in SD version 3.01. The maximum possible size of SDXC maps has increased to two terabites, which are certainly enough for everyone. At least for the coming years.
